It is not hard to see why southern cottages have become a favorite design. They are warm and inviting. Southerners love the simple things in life like family, friends, home and the outdoors.

Comfortable Space

A large wraparound porch provides great curb appeal, and a comfortable space to step outside from multiple rooms to catch a breath of fresh air and warming sunshine. The porch ceiling is a beautiful stained wood and has ceiling fans creating a soft breeze. The large porch has room for a swing to take in the southern way of life. It is an area for relaxation where charm meets comfort.

Exterior

The cottage exterior may be constructed with board and batten or artisan siding along with an old-fashioned brick or sometimes stucco. There are beautiful details such as open rafter tails, hanging lanterns, carriage house garage doors, distinct columns and decorative railings. Tall windows with transoms and shutters show the southern love for the outdoors and their appreciation of bright interiors with natural light. The front exterior isn’t the only welcoming space. The back usually has a covered porch or balcony, and many have screened in rooms or sunrooms. In the south the outdoor living spaces hold the same importance as indoor spaces. There are comfortable furnishings in which to relax. The outdoor fireplace is a favorite place to hold gatherings of friends and family. Grilling out is a common past-time on weekends. The southern lifestyle usually involves water and these cottages are the perfect addition for a waterfront lot.

Family Life

Cottage plans are designed to be cozy spaces that are conducive to family life. They are well thought out designs with practical use of space. Modern designs often have open floor plans with areas for the family to comfortably gather. They have well planned out kitchens sometimes with built in seating, well placed master suites often with a view, walk in closets, game rooms or bonus rooms, large windows for natural light, and views of the backyard from many rooms. Porches are common along with outdoor living areas with outdoor kitchens and sometimes fireplaces. Sometimes they have detached garages with covered walkways, or carriage houses for additional living space.
